Basel William Sara Syrian Harpist , Basel Sara, began his studies in 1995 at the High Institute of Music in Damascus, Syria where he majored in Harp with a secondary major in Piano. Basel graduated in 2001. Shortly after his graduation, Basel was chosen to be an Assistant Teacher of Russian Harp at the High Institute of Music in Damascus. Basel also studied in St. Petersburg, Russia at the State Conservatory of Rimsky Korsakov, under the prestigious Russian harp teacher, Irina Donskaia, where he earned a Doctorate of Musical Arts (DMA). Madam Donskaia instructed Basel on quality of sound, building up technique, and finding solutions to finger positioning. In 2004 Basel graduated from the Doctorate on Musical Arts Program with his diploma in Art and Performing Specialties in the Field of Orchestral Stringed Instrument (harp). Presently Basel is employed as the Main Harp Teacher at the High Institute of Music in Damascus, drawing from his own education and expertise, he utilizes the methodology of teaching students, as he was taught in Russia by Madam Donskaia. Basel Sara has been commissioned to perform in many of the concert halls in St. Petersburg, Russia, including the Philharmonic Concert Hall of St. Petersburg and with the Orchestra of Chapella Academy. Basel hopes to gain more publicity for the pedal harp in his home country by drawing more audiences with his performances and increasing its popularity with music students.
