Amy Vining has been playing the harp since the summer of 1999. She began with very little formal musical training. It is the first instrument she has studied with serious intent.
She decided to take up the harp when
she saw a picture of one in a dulcimer magazine. She
was looking for another instrument that would suit her better,
and the harp seemed to fit the bill. She also thought
that it would be fun to build a folk harp, and she and her
husband David have built a dozen or so. She warns
people that harps are like potato chips: you can't have just
one! After taking a few months of private
lessons, she began to teach herself. Over the years she
has increased her skills as a musician, learning how to
arrange music for the harp and to accompany herself while singing. She
likes to encourage those people she meets who are fascinated
by the harp to give it a try, believing that if she can learn
to play, anybody can, regardless of whether or not a person
has previous musical training. She believes that the opportunities
she has been given by God to play the harp are blessings
meant to be shared with others. She realized this
when she began to play for her grandparents in their nursing
home. She learned that the music of the harp has beneficial
qualities for those who are infirm, ill, or just sad and lonely. She
found that the harp is unparalleled by any other instrument
in reaching people on an emotional and spiritual level.
Although she does play professionally,
her main focus as a harpist is providing music therapy and
entertainment as a volunteer in nursing homes, hospitals
and hospices. She also plays regularly in churches and
gives educational talks about the harp in schools and for civic
organizations. She considers it a tremendous privilege
to share her love of the harp, and the Lord who brought its
gift to her, with others. One of
the highlights of playing the harp for others is the reaction Amy gets to her Venus Protege
pedal harp. This lovely harp is a real crowd-pleaser
and goodwill ambassador every place it goes. Its sweet voice
and magnificent looks are very impressive and invite the compliments
of its audience. She looks forward to many more years of making
beautiful music with this harp.
